November 15., 2024.
The 11th Interethnic Theatre Festival in Satu Mare started

Thursday 14 November marked the beginning of the Interethnic Theatre Festival to Satu Mare, which brings together companies representing minority theatre in Romania and their representative performances. The Proscenium Foundation in Satu Mare has already hosted the eighth and tenth editions of the festival in 2016 and 2022, and now the organisers have the honour of hosting the festival for the third time.

The festival began with a performance of The Doctor by the Csiky Gergely Hungarian State Theatre in Timișoara. On behalf of the organizers, Bessenyei Gedő István, Festival Director and President of the Proscenium Foundation, Stier Péter, Festival Manager and Vice President of the Proscenium Foundation, Thomas Șindilariu, Deputy State Secretary of the Department of Interethnic Relations (DRI) and Karácsonyi Zsolt, Executive Vice President of the RMDSZ for Culture, welcomed the festival audience.

„For centuries, Satu Mare and Satu Mare County have been a meeting point for different cultures, and it is perhaps not an exaggeration to say that today it is one of the most important meeting points in Hungary. It is hard to think of a better location for the Interethnic Theatre Festival than Satu Mare, where interethnic dialogue is not only a special occasion but part of everyday life. Satu Mare is a land of everyday intercultural dialogue, but time and again - for the third time! - Satu Mare is also a place for inter-theatre dialogue, through the work of internationally renowned artists. (...) It is a pleasure and a pride to host them. And the greatest joy of all is to be able to offer our beloved audiences a new - and extraordinary - theatrical experience by presenting their finest works." - said Bessenyei Gedő István.

Stier Péter summed up the festival's rich offer in numbers: "11 days, 25 companies, 27 performances". As he pointed out, the series of events is organised by a handful of enthusiastic teams, but their efforts bring the experience of the theatre festival to thousands of spectators. He also thanked the MASZÍN Hungarian Theatre Association, co-organiser of the festival, its main sponsor, the Department for Interethnic Relations, and the other partners of the festival: The Harag György Company, the Satu Mare Mayor's Office, the Satu Mare County Council, the UDMR, the Yard and Aquastar.

Thomas Șindilariu, Deputy State Secretary, welcomed the audience in both German and Hungarian, and continued his speech in Romanian, saying that it was a pleasure for him to meet the audience of a multicultural festival in a place that is a „true champion” of the coexistence of different nations. He also drew attention to the fact that, in his view, theatre is the place that fills the gaps of school (education), i.e. it teaches to formulate clear thoughts and can also develop the "www" and "smartphone generation" in self-expression.

Karácsonyi Zsolt started his reflections with a quote from Hamlet: "The body is with the king, but the king is not with the body" - he quoted. ”Every actor, every minority theatre is confronted with the paradox of the duality of presence. How much can we be present in our own national culture as a minority, how much can we be part of the majority culture around us, and, not incidentally, what chance do we have to be present in the theatrical everyday life of minorities who are still active in the same cultural space and who have values that we share?” - he posed the question and concluded with the following thought: “ The 11th Interethnic Theatre Festival gives space to the ordinary body, a chance for the eternal actor's body to present the world, our worlds, as a unified whole.”

During the eleven days of the 11th Interethnic Theatre Festival, in addition to prose performances, the audience is invited to a puppet theatre, book launches, concerts and afterparties.
The first day's programme continued with a "lyrical concert" of Jack Cole's songs by the Transylvanian Bú Boys, who recalled the poetry of Kovács András Ferenc, and ended with an afterparty in the Yard.
