„The Hammer of the Village”, written in 1844, is one of the greatest linguistic and stylistic achievements of Hungarian literature. Petőfi calls it a heroic poem, but it is in fact a comic epic, even an epic parody. The poet presents a barroom brawl by constantly reminding us of epic gestures, distorting them into comic.

The work is not only a parody in its language and structure, but also a mirror of our contemporary society through the actions of the characters in the story: it is a believable caricature of the timeless Hungarian bickering. If, in the written work, the author exposes the heroic poems of his own time, the peculiar, grating, torrential style of the genre, which was very prevalent in our literature at the time - the performance created by Béres László points to the evils of the performing arts of our time.
